Until I Can began with a sentence I already knew I wanted to write one day. If I ever finish the book about my life, I know what the inscription will say:
“For Jon [my husband], who loved me when I couldn’t love myself.”
That thought became this painting. Among layers of pink, burgundy and white, the words appear almost tentatively:
“Love me… until I can love myself.”
There is vulnerability in asking someone to hold something for you that you cannot yet hold for yourself. But there is hope in it too. The words aren't love me because I can't. They're love me until I can. Perhaps that's what love sometimes is: someone seeing something worth loving in us before we're quite able to see it ourselves.
