I don't paint for anyone else. Painting is probably the most selfish thing I do: a few hours when I can disappear completely into colour, texture and whatever happens on the canvas.
Usually, I think I'm in charge. This painting reminded me that sometimes I'm not. It began as something far less allegorical. But as the layers of deep green, black, grey and gold emerged, so did a thought that felt increasingly insistent:
We are not born just to live, work and then die. We are made for worship.
So I wrote it into the painting.
Made For Worship is a reminder that a life measured purely in productivity is far too small. There must be room for awe. For meaning. For something beyond ourselves.
Perhaps that's partly why I paint in the first place.
