L’Amour et La Guerre began as an experiment in mark-making: acrylic paint, colour, scratches, lines and gestures layered instinctively across the surface.

I hated it!

So much so that I was planning to cut it up and use the pieces for collage. My husband had other ideas. He loved it, insisted I leave it alone, framed it and hung it in our guest room.

Annoyingly, he may have had a point.

It has since become one of both my mother and mother-in-law’s favourite pieces, which taught me something about the peculiar relationship between making art and appreciating it. The artist doesn’t get the final say.

Deep burgundy, chalky white and soft green collide and overlap, interrupted by scratches, crosses, circles and flashes of gold. There is tension and tenderness, order and disorder, things obscured and things revealed.

Hence the name: L’Amour et La Guerre (Love and War). Perhaps it's about the contradictions we find in relationships. Perhaps it's about my relationship with the painting itself.

Either way, it makes the cut.

    Powerfully inspiring

There's a notion that light and dark are separate entities but this painting shows that isn't true, there is pure emotion and a powerful feeling that it is a constant battle which shows with this art. I can understand that everyone wants the same thing. We just need to take a step back and appreciate each different sides has the same plan.
