Grace makes me think of God's grace towards us: forgiveness freely given, not because we have earned it or managed to make ourselves perfect first, but in the midst of all our flaws, mistakes and very human mess.
The painting is full of evidence of what has gone before. Scratches, lines, disruptions and layers remain visible; nothing has been carefully erased or covered up. But running through those marks is gold.
For me, that became an image of what grace can do. It doesn't pretend the scars were never there, or require us to arrive unblemished. It meets us as we are and transforms what we carry, not necessarily by removing the broken places, but by allowing beauty to exist within them.
There is something comforting to me about that. The idea that being marked by life doesn't make us less worthy. That forgiveness can be given before we've worked out how to forgive ourselves. And that the things we might instinctively want to hide can become part of something beautiful.
