God is a Woman Too began as an experiment. Inspired by Peter Lanyon’s Silent Coast, I started by exploring the structure and layering of the original work. But somewhere along the way, the painting took on a life of its own. What emerged was something altogether different: a landscape of sky, sea and earth, layered with sweeping blues, muted neutrals, flashes of gold and expressive marks. It evokes the story of creation: sky, sea and earth emerging through layers of sweeping blues, muted neutrals and flashes of gold. The coastline seems to hover somewhere between the real and imagined; part landscape, part feeling.
The title came from a conversation with my daughter, Layla, about what it means to be made in God’s image. If God is the ultimate creator, then perhaps creativity belongs to all of us. We simply find different ways to express it. This was also the painting that made me begin to think of myself, however tentatively, as an artist. My son, Zak, loved it so much that he insisted on paying £5 for it, making it the first piece of art I ever sold. And as the legal owner of the original God is a Woman Too, Zak would like it known that this work is reproduced with his express permission. You lucky things!
